A practical guide for DNA evidence of descent and relationship Click to order our last book, A practical guide for DNA evidence of descent and relationship Can a couple (one with straight hair, one with curly) have a straight hairy child and a tangled hair, and one of the children has green eyes and the other blue? Both parents have green. Is it possible? 27 August 2004 The quick answer is that it is possible for the couple who describe having children with blue or green eyes. (Although it is less likely, it is even possible to have a son of brown eyes.) In terms of hair type, by the traditional theories that are out there, it is not possible that a couple of straight hairs and a couple of straight hairs have straight hairy children (or, by a strict definition, curly hair children neither!). Of course, genetics are always more complex than traditional theories. One way for the couple who describes having a straight hairy child is if the parent who runs curly has wavy instead of curly hair. It may seem a minor distinction, but from a genetic point of view, the difference is critical. Why would this distinction matter? Remember, for most genes, you have two copies of each gene you inherited from your mother and your father. For most "traditional" genes, there is a dominant and recessive version. What this means is that if you have one or two copies of a dominant version of a gene, you'll look like that gene. To look like the recessive version, you need two copies of the recessive form. For example, with something simple as if the lobes are attached or not, there are two versions (or alleles) of the auditory lobe attachment gene. The free lobe (G) is dominant over attachment (g). What this means is that if you inherit a G version of this gene from your mother or father, you will have free ear lobes. To have attached lobes, you need to get a g copy of both parents. Thus, from a gene point of view (or genotype), both a GG and a Gg person have free ear lobes and a gg has attached ear lobes. How does it work for hair type and eye color? Neither the hair type nor the eye color works in this simple way. There are two versions of the hair type, curly (C) and straight (s). The type of hair is an interesting case of something called incomplete domain. What this means is that with the type of hair, if you have one of each version of the gene, you get a mix of two or wavy hair. So for the hair type, CC da curly, Cs da onda and ss gives straight hair. Go back to your specific situation. As you probably know, the couple you described could only have hairy, undulating children. This is because the parents who are heading curly, CC, can only provide a C gene and the right hairy parent, only one gene s. That means all the kids will be Cs and have wavy hair. Of course, the wave and curling are in the shareholder's eye! If your person headed with curves really had wavy hair, he or she would be a Cs. An undulating hairy person can contribute either to a C or a gene s. If you join a straight haired person (sss), then children would have straight hair (sss) or wavy (Cs). That's probably more than you wanted to know! For the color of the eyes, I will refer to two questions that we have answered before. The first is a description of the traditional eye color heritage that will work well for your case. The second is a good description of how genetic rules are sometimes broken. Why do some people have curly hair while others have straight hair? If one's hair is curly or straight it depends on you inheriting from your parents. The structure and composition of the hair also play a role. If one's hair is curly or straight it depends on you inheriting from your parents. The structure and composition of the hair also play a role. There are certain physical attributes of a person who cannot be artificially altered, at least in a truly permanent way. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on the person you're talking to. For example, the height of one cannot increase (visibly) after a certain age, the color of the skin cannot change and the straight hair cannot be curled (without extensive treatments). In this article, we shall speak exclusively of that last article. The structure of hair follicles A hair thread has two basic components: the axis (the black part that appears above the scalp) and the hair follicle (which resides in the skin and is not visible). Photo credit: en.wikipedia.org In simple words, it can be said that a follicle is the body organ responsible for producing hair. Previsibly, the attributes of a hair follicle directly impact the shape and texture of the hair it produces. The shape of the follicle, in turn, is affected by the genes that you inherit from your parents. Gene control if you have straight or curly hairThe curly hair is an autosomal dominant trait (). A dominant autosomal trait is one in which one of the parents (father or mother) has a mutate (and dominant), while the other does not. People sometimes suffer from a dominant autosomal disorder, which means they run 50% chance of having a child with a mutated (and dominant) gene. () As mentioned above, curly hair is a self-sufficient dominant trait, which means that one parent has straight hair, while the other has curly hair. So you have genes of both types, but the dominant curly hair gene plays the right hair gene and is expressed in the offspring, that is, yourself. In some cases, when there are differences in strength and type of genes, you end up having the hair that is somewhere in the center – a little straight and a little curly. How do genes affect the hair texture? In a course conducted in 2009, it was found that curly hair genes have a heritability of 85-95%, which means that (within the sample of study) nine tenths of the cases of variation in the hair texture can be linked back to those of the subjects. Image credit: designua / Shutterstock It was also found that the nature of the follicles directly impacts the curvature of the strands of hair. If the follicles are symmetrical, the hair grows to be straight, while if the follicles are asymmetrical, they produce the oval-shaped hair that tends to curl as it grows. Curly hair and straight hair have different compositions The composition of a strand of hair also impacts the texture of the hair, that is, whether it is straight or curly. In 2007, multiple samples of human hair were collected from different shapes and textures to investigate structural elements that could be related to the hairline pattern. Using electron microscopy to compare curly and straight hair fibers, it was observed that the former had an unequal distribution of a specific type of keratin (Queratin is a protein and a primary component of the hair), while straight hair fibers were symmetrical in the structure. There are ways through which you can. Some only have a temporary effect (such as hair curers), while some treatments make the most permanent changes, although these have some side effects. However, in the end, everything is reduced to a simple option - if you want to experience with the hair that you are born with or paste with the same hairstyle for all eternity! is a Bachelor of Sciences at the University of Punjabi (India).
