Genetic differences for babies from 'Test Tube'? Researchers seek health risk solution for babies born through assisted reproductive technologies 22 February 2010 -- Babies born through and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have more genetic differences than naturally conceived babies, according to a researcher, although most babies who studied ''tubo' remain within the normal range. ''There's no big difference between the two groups of children, so it's comforting," says researcher Carmen Sapienza, PhD, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine and acting director of the Fels Research Institute of the University of Temple Medical School in Philadelphia. He presented findings of his study at this annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Diego and published his findings in Human Molecular Genetics. The information, as it evolves, should help the parents of ART babies - and the children themselves, as they mature - keep abreast of any additional health risks associated with genetic differences and take preventive measures, Sapienza tells WebMD. Since the first 'test tube baby' was born in 1978, more than 3 million children have been born with the help of ART. Health Risks of Babies ART Experts have known that, as a group, ART children have a greater risk of having some birth defect and of being born at low birth weight, which in turn is associated with risks to, , and later in life. Thus, Sapienza and his colleagues examined pleasurable and cord DNA samples of 10 children from ARTE and 12 children who had been naturally conceived. Researchers were looking for differences in DNA methylation levels, a type of modification that excites genes in and out. When lighting a particular gene, says Sapienza, it may be linked to increased risk of disease -- for example, a gene that controls glucose, when it is lit too much, may be associated with . First, researchers examined DNA methylation marks in 800 genes in the two groups of children, says Sapienza. "What we find is between 5% and 10% of the genes have significant differences between the two groups in methylation, depending on whether we were seeing placental or cord."ContinuedThey also found these differences sometimes led to differences in the expression of nearby genes, the way they activate or turn off. What is not known, says Sapienza, is whether differences are the result of ART or are associated with other factors, such as the same. Several of the genes whose expression was found differ between the groups have been related to the development of fat and glucose tissues. However, only a small fraction of ARTE babies, despite the observed differences, were found outside the ''normal' range, says Sapienza. Second Opinion New findings are believed to be the first to show on a molecular basis differences between ART and other children, says Marvin L. Meistrich, PhD, experimental oncology professor at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Center, Houston. "It is not a matter of concern," says Meistrich, who participated in a symposium that presented the results of the study at the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Continue'Yes, you found some anomalies associated with the process but anomalies can be very subtle," Meistrich told WebMD. The results of the study are preliminary, he says, and it is expected that information on the differences will evolve as more work is done in the area. Those who have had ARTE children or are ARTE children should try to follow the research results closely, Meistrich says. If more research links specific genetic differences in children with specific diseases, '' they could become proactive and begin monitoring or taking preventive measures for this disease. "For example, if genetic differences demonstrate to increase the risk of , the person conceived by ART can opt for routine at an early age.
